Applying Unified Design and Asset Information Management Solutions
Integrating Shipyards' Separate Design Environments
Step-by-Step Upgrades to Save Time
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is integrating the design systems of its shipbuilding subsidiaries. By standardizing design software, the company aims to enhance collaboration efficiency among shipyards and reduce both the time and errors that occur during the design and production stages.
Industrial software company AVEVA announced on January 22 that it signed an integrated supply contract on January 16 with three shipbuilding companies under HD Hyundai: HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. The contract covers the ship and offshore design solution "AVEVA Marine" and the asset information management solution "AVEVA AIM."

The core of this contract is to unify the design environments, which were previously operated separately at each shipyard, onto a single digital platform. Until now, each shipyard under HD Hyundai's shipbuilding division has used similar but different design systems, which created limitations in sharing design data and collaborating. AVEVA plans to continuously upgrade the design systems currently used at HD Hyundai's shipyards. Rather than simply supplying licenses, AVEVA will improve functionalities by reflecting actual on-site requirements that arise during the design and production processes.
To achieve this, AVEVA is collaborating with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, centering on its "Marine Center of Excellence," which was established in Busan in 2022. Through this partnership, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aims to enhance design quality and stability, while also securing a design infrastructure that can adapt to changes in the future business environment over the medium to long term. As the complexity of ship design increases due to diversification of ship types and expansion of eco-friendly vessels, the goal is to reduce bottlenecks in the design stage.
Connecting the entire ship design process within a single environment will make it easier to link data between previously separated design stages, such as hull, outfitting, and electrical. The company explained that design changes can be immediately reflected in the production stage, thereby reducing rework.
Yoo Youngwoong, Executive Director of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said, "The application of these solutions is expected to advance the design environment and innovate the entire process." Chris Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific at AVEVA, stated, "The two companies have been at the forefront of digital innovation in shipbuilding for over 20 years, and this collaboration will support the entire value chain in the shipbuilding and offshore sector."
