On Social Media:
"Framework Established for Future Agreements on Greenland and the Arctic with NATO Secretary General"
President Donald Trump of the United States announced on January 21 (local time) that, regarding the issue of Greenland’s annexation, a framework for future agreements had been established with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). As a result, he also decided to withdraw plans to impose tariffs on eight European countries, which were scheduled to take effect from February 1.
President Trump made this announcement through Truth Social, the social media platform he created, stating, “I had a very productive meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.”
He added, “We have established the basic framework for future agreements not only concerning Greenland, but also for the entire Arctic region,” and emphasized, “If this agreement is ultimately concluded, it will yield excellent results for the United States as well as for all NATO member countries.”
President Trump cited the conclusion of this agreement as the reason for his decision, stating, “We will not impose the tariffs that were scheduled to take effect from February 1.” Previously, he had announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on imports from eight European countries, including Denmark, which opposes the annexation of Greenland, starting February 1, and to increase it to 25% from June 1.
Additionally, President Trump mentioned that further discussions are underway regarding the “Golden Dome” initiative, the United States’ next-generation missile defense system, in connection with Greenland. He added that details would be released as soon as the talks progress.
This round of negotiations is being handled by Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, all of whom are expected to report directly to President Trump.
