Emphasizing Cloud-Based 5G for Becoming an AI Powerhouse
"Overcoming the Limitations of Existing 5G, Unlimited Data Plans Below 30,000 Won Possible"
Assemblywoman Jun Hyunhee of the Democratic Party of Korea emphasized the need to introduce cloud-based 5G SA (standalone mode) to build a high-speed communication highway for becoming a leading nation in artificial intelligence (AI). She also stated that the transition in communication technology could lower unlimited data plan fees to below 30,000 won.
On January 21 at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Assemblywoman Jun held a press conference and said, "By introducing cloud-based 5G SA, we must significantly reduce communication costs, restore the people's communication sovereignty, and build the infrastructure that will enable Korea to become one of the world's top three AI powerhouses."
5G SA is a technology that uses the 5G network for both data and signaling, making it more efficient than the currently used 5G NSA (non-standalone mode). While 5G NSA uses the 5G network, it relies on the LTE network for data signaling.
Assemblywoman Jun pointed out, "Although most people are currently paying for 5G services, in reality, due to the equipment-dependent 5G NSA service, we are enduring higher costs, slower speeds, and sometimes even disconnections compared to the United States, China, and Japan, which have already adopted 5G SA and are recognized as the world's top three communication powerhouses."
She further argued that Korea should establish AI cloud-based 5G SA as the national communication standard infrastructure and swiftly transition to the 6G era. She said, "With the introduction of AI cloud-based 5G, which is the core model of next-generation communication implemented by the United States, China, and Japan, a fast and seamless communication environment must be established. Only then can technologies such as robots, autonomous vehicles, physical AI, and urban air mobility (UAM) be realized quickly and safely in the real world without malfunction."
She added, "For Korea to achieve the status of one of the world's top three AI powerhouses, as emphasized by President Lee Jaemyung, it is not enough to simply lay down the network; we must adopt an intelligent network infrastructure that combines AI and cloud as the national standard."
She also said that the introduction of an unlimited data plan priced below 30,000 won could bring about innovation in the telecommunications sector. Assemblywoman Jun stressed, "We must change the current high-priced plan structure caused by operational costs such as base station installations, which is a limitation of 5G NSA." She argued, "Like Japan, which has already introduced 5G SA, we should implement a 'truly unlimited data plan' that allows users to communicate without worrying about data at a price below 30,000 won."
Meanwhile, Assemblywoman Jun is preparing to run as the Democratic Party's candidate for Seoul Mayor.
