Kiturami Announces Boiler Management and Heating Strategies for Severe Cold Weather

Most Freezing Incidents Occur in Pipes
Continuous Power Supply and Proper Insulation Are Essential

Kiturami announced on January 21 that it is providing guidance on "Boiler Management and Heating Strategies for Severe Cold Weather" to help prevent boiler freezing incidents and reduce heating costs amid ongoing cold waves nationwide.

Most winter boiler freezing incidents occur in water-carrying pipes. Pipes connected to the boiler-such as direct water, heating, hot water, and condensate pipes-should be wrapped with insulation to block external cold air. If the insulation is damaged or old, it is advisable to replace it.

Kiturami boilers are equipped with a "two-stage freeze protection function" that activates the circulation pump when the heating water temperature drops below 8°C and automatically turns on the heating when it falls below 5°C. However, this function does not operate if the power supply is cut off, so it is important to keep the boiler powered on and the gas and distributor valves open during periods of severe cold.

When leaving the house, it is more effective to lower the indoor temperature setting rather than turning off the boiler completely. Turning off the boiler and being away for an extended period can cause the indoor temperature to drop rapidly, increasing the risk of frozen pipes. Additionally, reheating the home after returning can lead to higher heating costs. Kiturami recommends maintaining an indoor temperature of 18-21°C during winter.

To further reduce heating costs, combining whole-house heating with partial heating can be helpful. This involves minimizing heat loss through insulation and draft-proofing, and using low-power heating devices in living areas. The Kiturami third-generation carbon mat, designed for low power consumption at 160W, can shorten boiler operation time while increasing perceived warmth, making it an effective solution for managing heating costs during severe cold.

Additionally, boilers that have been used for more than 10 years may have reduced thermal efficiency, leading to higher heating costs and increased safety risks. Replacing them with eco-friendly condensing boilers can improve energy efficiency. Kiturami, in partnership with Hyundai Rental Care, offers the "Ttasoom Care" boiler rental service, allowing customers to install eco-friendly condensing boilers without upfront costs.

If the boiler or pipes freeze, prompt action is required depending on the symptoms. If there is no hot water, it may indicate freezing in the direct water or hot water pipes. In this case, remove the insulation and gently thaw the pipes using a warm towel (50-60°C). If the floor remains cold despite heating, self-repair may be difficult, so it is safer to seek assistance from the manufacturer’s customer service center or a professional service company. Kiturami also provides a video guide on "Emergency Self-Help Methods for Frozen Boiler Pipes in Winter" through its official KakaoTalk channel.
