Gangnam District Launches New 'Air Conditioner Cleaning' Support for Low-Income Households

500 Households Including Those with Respiratory Illnesses and People with Disabilities

Gangnam District in Seoul (District Mayor Cho Sungmyung) has newly added air conditioner cleaning support to its residential environment improvement services for low-income and vulnerable groups.

The district announced that starting this year, it will introduce an air conditioner cleaning service to ease the burden on low-income households, whose use of cooling devices increases during heat waves. Following the existing home care and laundry/storage services, the district aims to improve living conditions and protect residents’ health during the summer.

To reduce the risk of respiratory diseases caused by air conditioner contamination and to improve cooling efficiency, the district plans to select 500 households for support, prioritizing those with severe respiratory illnesses, people with disabilities, and the elderly among low-income families.

Since 2021, Gangnam District has operated customized services to improve the residential environment for vulnerable groups. Last year, the home care service supported 311 cases of general and specialized cleaning, 500 cases of disinfection, and 269 cases of minor home repairs. Minor repairs included wallpaper and floor replacement, installation of insect screens, safety handles, and gas shut-off valves. In addition, the district provided laundry services for bedding to 145 households per month and storage services to 45 households per month.

Residents wishing to receive customized residential environment improvement services this year can apply through the welfare officer at their local community center from January to June. After applications are submitted, the district’s Welfare Security Committee will review and select the recipients.

Cho Sungmyung, Mayor of Gangnam District, stated, “This project is not about repeating the same support every year, but rather about continuously refining services based on needs and feedback identified on-site. Small changes such as cleaning and repairs can lead to safer and more comfortable daily lives at home, so we will continue to expand support in ways that residents can truly experience.”
