Securing 148 Billion Won to Focus on Maintenance and Dredging of High-Risk Areas
Mungyeong City is launching a full-scale river disaster prevention project to prepare for extreme weather events such as typhoons and heavy rainfall.
The city plans to secure stable funding from both the national and provincial governments to accelerate river maintenance and systematically build a safety infrastructure that protects the lives and property of its citizens.
To reduce flood damage, Mungyeong City is expanding narrow river channels and securing additional freeboard, thereby strengthening flood control functions. In addition, bridges with insufficient span length and freeboard, which are at risk of overflow, will be replaced to eliminate structural hazards in advance. River maintenance that considers water flow is also being implemented to enhance disaster response capabilities.
The city is also working to ensure stable water supply for agricultural sites. The performance of intake weirs, which has declined, will be improved through ongoing maintenance and reinforcement, enabling a reliable supply of agricultural water and contributing to the convenience of residents and the sustainability of the agricultural infrastructure.
Large-scale maintenance projects are also being expedited. Mungyeong City will invest a total of 89.8 billion won in three comprehensive disaster prevention zones: the Sinbuk District, Yangsan 2 District, and Jonggok District.
In addition, the city has secured 29 billion won for the Ugok Natural Disaster Risk Improvement Zone project and 29.7 billion won for the Seokbongcheon and Sangwicheon small river maintenance projects, and will proceed accordingly.
Starting with basic and detailed design services, the city will conduct thorough risk analyses for each project site and enhance project quality through customized maintenance plans tailored to local conditions.
Maintenance closely tied to daily life will also be expanded in disaster-prone areas. Mungyeong City will invest 3.4 billion won to reinforce embankments, repair aging riverbanks, and improve facilities across 26 small rivers in the region, including Gak Seocheon.
Additionally, to minimize damage during heavy rainfall and ensure river discharge capacity, 500 million won will be invested in riverbed dredging projects, including the removal of sediment and obstacles, with the goal of completing these works before the rainy season begins.
A Mungyeong City official stated, "River disaster prevention projects are a fundamental administrative task to protect the lives and safety of our citizens," adding, "We will continue to proactively respond to natural disasters through ongoing maintenance and management."
