Gyeongnam Information University Conducts Carotid Artery Ultrasound Medical Volunteer Service for Seniors

Biohealth Living Lab Project

Gyeongnam Information University has begun building a preventive-focused health management model through medical volunteer activities targeting the local elderly population.

On January 20, the university announced that, as part of the Biohealth Living Lab Project to address Busan's transition into a super-aged society, it recently conducted a "Carotid Artery Ultrasound Examination Medical Volunteer Service for Local Seniors" at Baekyang Comprehensive Social Welfare Center in Mora-dong, Sasang District.

The Biohealth Living Lab Project is a research initiative led by Kim Jeongnam, Head of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, along with students, focusing on preventive health management policies for the local elderly population. The project aims to establish a regionally customized support model based on objective health indicators, in collaboration with local governments and related organizations.

This medical volunteer service was carried out in partnership with the KIT Regional Love Volunteer Group and targeted Sasang District residents aged 55 and older. The carotid artery ultrasound examination measures the intima-media thickness and blood flow velocity of the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain, to assess vascular stenosis, arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and stroke risk. The results of the examinations will be used as foundational data for analyzing the health status of the region's elderly population in the future.

Kim Jeongnam, Head of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, stated, "It was an opportunity for students to participate in the examinations alongside professors who are clinical laboratory scientists, allowing them to develop both their professional skills and spirit of service." He added, "Through the Busan RISE Project, we will continue to provide community-linked medical volunteer services and expand lifelong education for local residents, thereby strengthening demand-driven clinical laboratory education."
