Intensive Hygiene Inspection of Ritual and Gift Foods
Focus on Livestock Product Safety
Ensuring Food Safety as the Top Priority
Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Donghwan) announced on January 20 that it will conduct the "2026 Lunar New Year Holiday Food and Livestock Product Safety Inspection" until January 23, so that citizens can safely purchase and consume holiday foods during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
This inspection aims to strengthen hygiene and safety management for foods and livestock products that see high consumption during the holiday period, such as ritual and gift items.
The city plans to inspect a total of around 100 locations, including food manufacturing and processing businesses, large supermarkets, traditional markets, health functional food stores, and livestock product retailers that handle holiday foods.
This inspection will be carried out in cooperation with the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police, focusing on compliance with relevant laws such as the Food Sanitation Act, the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, and the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act. The inspection will concentrate on areas including hygiene management in workplaces, standards for storing refrigerated and frozen foods, use of products past their expiration date, self-quality inspections, and labeling standards for packaged meat or gift sets. Administrative action will be taken if any violations are found.
In particular, the city will also collect and inspect cooked foods that are popular among citizens at large supermarkets and traditional markets, such as rice cakes and pancakes, as well as ritual-use meat and packaged meat. If any food is found to be non-compliant as a result of the inspection, immediate measures such as recall and disposal will be taken.
An official from Goyang Special City stated, "Since the consumption of holiday foods is concentrated during the holiday period, we will thoroughly inspect everything from distribution to cooking environments to ensure there are no gaps in food safety for our citizens."
