0.8 MW Solar Power Plant to Be Installed at “Forest of Serenity” in Idong-eup
Revenue to Create “Sunlight Fund” and Be Reinvested in Renewable Energy Projects
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on January 20 that it has been selected for Gyeonggi Province’s “Climate Safe Shade Project” and has secured a special adjustment grant of 1.896 billion won.
This project aims to create eco-friendly climate infrastructure such as solar-powered shelters and canopies in unused public spaces.
For this competition, the province allocated a total of 25 billion won in special grants to local governments, aiming to install 12 MW of climate-safe shade structures, and selected the target sites in December 2025.
Starting this year, the city will use the secured special grant to install a solar power plant with a capacity of 0.8 MW at the “Forest of Serenity” parking lot in Eobi-ri, Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu, among other locations. The solar power plant will consist of a 0.7 MW commercial facility and a 0.1 MW self-use facility.
In particular, the city will implement the project using the “Sunlight Fund Project” model, in which the public sector directly participates in the production and supply of renewable energy to increase local energy self-sufficiency. Revenue from electricity sales generated by operating the solar power plant will be used to create a “Sunlight Fund,” which will be reinvested in expanding the supply of renewable energy and related initiatives.
With the continued rise in power demand expected due to the development of the semiconductor cluster, the city is steadily expanding its renewable energy capacity. In both 2024 and the previous year, Yongin was also selected for the “Gyeonggi RE100 Leading Project” for two consecutive years.
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, “This project allows the public sector to directly produce and operate renewable energy, with the results being reinvested into renewable energy sources. Based on our experience with the RE100 Leading Project, we will gradually expand the foundation for renewable energy.”
