This press conference drew significant attention as it marked the final press briefing in Mayor Jung's 31-year political career, which began in 1995. This is because last September, Mayor Jung announced that he would not run in future public elections and would retire from politics after completing his term as the 8th popularly elected mayor of Pyeongtaek.
During the conference, Mayor Jung reflected that he had achieved meaningful results during the 7th and 8th terms of the popularly elected administration, particularly in resolving long-standing local projects that had been stalled, expanding urban infrastructure, and fostering future industries.
He cited the development of the Pyeongtaek Lake Tourism Complex, the creation of the Brain City General Industrial Complex, the successful attraction of an international school, KAIST, and Ajou University Hospital, and the reorganization of the public transportation system as major accomplishments during his tenure.
For this year, Mayor Jung presented six core directions for city administration: ▲ revitalizing the local economy with a focus on residents' livelihoods ▲ developing a self-sustaining economy and fostering future high-tech industries ▲ building a balanced city with convenient living conditions ▲ creating a green and environmentally friendly city ▲ establishing an international cultural city rich in attractions ▲ and advancing education and warm welfare for the future.
Regarding the Samsung Pyeongtaek Campus, Mayor Jung stated that he plans to strengthen support to ensure the smooth resumption of the P5 construction project. He also announced that preparations for the comprehensive funeral facility, which has been confirmed for Unsan 1-ri in Jinwi-myeon, will proceed without delay.
He expressed particular interest in the redevelopment of the Multi-Cultural Plaza in front of Pyeongtaek Station, which is scheduled for completion in September. Mayor Jung explained that once the project is finished, the plaza will serve as a key hub for the revitalization of the declining old downtown area.
He added that he will thoroughly prepare for large-scale projects critical to the city's future, such as the development of the Pyeongtaek Jije Station Multi-Transfer Center, for which a developer will be selected in July, and the KAIST Pyeongtaek Campus, to ensure their smooth progress during the remainder of his term.
Mayor Jung said, "Pyeongtaek will grow into a major city with a population of 1.05 million by 2040. I will not cease my efforts to create a sustainable city where citizens can live stably for the rest of my term."
