The "Namae Port Clean National Fishing Port Project" is a comprehensive redevelopment initiative aimed at systematically reorganizing the aging and disorderly fishing port space to restore its fishing functions, while simultaneously improving user safety and the port’s landscape. Selected as a national fishing port development project through a Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries public contest, the project will receive a total investment of 27 billion won (15.6 billion won in national funds and 11.4 billion won in local funds).

This project focuses on fully renovating outdated port facilities and strengthening environmental and safety infrastructure to improve working conditions for fishermen, while also creating a pleasant fishing port environment that both tourists and residents can use with confidence. Key initiatives include improving the management system for household and marine waste, expanding safety facilities, and introducing eco-friendly infrastructure.

Through this project, the following will be carried out in phases: demolition and reconstruction of outdated facilities such as the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and fishing community offices, the marine police station, restrooms, and storage buildings; reinforcement of port function facilities; expansion of areas for gear and vessel maintenance; improvement of parking lots and pedestrian routes; and enhancement of the breakwater and port landscape. As a result, Namae Port is expected to be transformed into a multifunctional port that combines fishing efficiency with visitor convenience.

This year, the county will focus on expediting key construction processes. To minimize disruption to fishing activities, the work will be divided into separate phases and carried out sequentially, while also strengthening on-site safety management.

The county and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Donghae Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries) plan to divide the project into six demolition phases and five reconstruction phases to be completed by 2027. Currently, the first phase of demolition has been completed, removing outdated facilities on the southwestern side of Namae Port. The first phase of reconstruction will involve building a new cold storage facility for the Fisheries Cooperative and new sales outlets for the cooperative and fishing community on the same site.

Namae Port is a region with high potential for integration with Yangyang County’s key tourism resources, such as surfing and marine tourism. The project is expected to strengthen its role as a hub for stay-type tourism. The county also anticipates that improvements to the port’s landscape and the creation of pedestrian-friendly spaces will help revitalize local businesses and create jobs.

A county official stated, "The Namae Port Clean National Fishing Port Project is not just about facility upgrades but is a core initiative to enhance the region’s future competitiveness. We will ensure the smooth progress of the project to establish Namae Port as a port worthy of its reputation as one of Gangwon Province’s three most beautiful harbors."
