Targeting Fifth and Sixth Graders and Out-of-School Youth
University Faculty to Lead Advanced Basic Science Program
Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province is joining hands with Hanyang University ERICA to foster gifted students in science.
On January 19, the city announced that it will operate the "Gwangmyeong Future Science Gifted Program" in collaboration with Hanyang University ERICA, targeting elementary school students who have an interest and potential in science.
This program offers advanced education in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology, with direct participation from the faculty of Hanyang University ERICA. It is Gwangmyeong City's flagship program for nurturing future talent, combining university expertise with public gifted education.
The program is open to fifth and sixth grade elementary school students in Gwangmyeong City, as well as students from alternative education institutions and out-of-school youth of the same age group. The city plans to select 30 participants, 15 from each grade, and run the program twice a month on weekends and during school vacations from March to August.
The curriculum is designed to focus on experiments, inquiry, and discussion, allowing participants to ask questions, think independently, and find answers regarding scientific concepts.
To this end, the city will hold an admissions information session at 10 a.m. on January 24 in the main building's second-floor conference room at Gwangmyeong City Hall. The session will provide detailed guidance on the program's direction, teaching methods, selection procedures, and schedule. No prior registration is required; attendees can participate on site. More information is available on the websites of Gwangmyeong City or the Gwangmyeong Digital Innovation Education Center.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, said, "We will take responsibility for nurturing creative future talent in our region who will lead the changing times based on fundamental science."
