Government to Begin Recovering 7.7 Billion Won in Advance Child Support Payments Starting Today

The government will begin the full-scale recovery of advance child support payments, totaling 7.7 billion won, which were provided to single-parent families and others on behalf of child support debtors.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Child Support Agency announced on January 19 that they will start the process of recovering advance child support payments that the state has paid first, by collecting the amounts from the child support debtors.

The recovery targets are 4,973 child support debtors who are obligated to pay child support that was advanced to single-parent families and others from July to December of last year. The total amount to be recovered is 7.73 billion won.

Since the decision to provide advance payments, the Child Support Agency has been notifying child support debtors in advance about the payments and the upcoming recovery process. Starting on this day, collection notices specifying the reason, amount, and payment deadline will be sent out, followed by a step-by-step process of reminders and compulsory collection. If the debtor does not comply with the collection notice, a payment reminder will be issued with a deadline of at least 30 days, scheduled for February or March. If the debtor still fails to pay after the reminder, an investigation into income and assets-including bank account balances-will be conducted, and compulsory collection procedures will be initiated between April and June. To facilitate this, the Child Support Agency will increase its collection staff from three to eleven this year.

The collection notices for advance child support payments provided from January to June of this year are scheduled to be sent in July.
