Government to Begin Recovering 7.7 Billion Won in Advance Child Support Payments Starting Today

The government will begin the full-scale recovery of 7.7 billion won in advance child support payments that were provided to single-parent families and others on behalf of child support debtors.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Child Support Agency announced on January 19 that they will initiate procedures to recover advance child support payments, which the state had paid first, from the child support debtors.

The recovery targets are 4,973 child support debtors who were obligated to pay child support that was advanced to single-parent families and others between July and December of last year. The total amount to be recovered is 7.73 billion won.

The Child Support Agency has been notifying child support debtors in advance, from the time the advance payment decision is made, that the state will seek recovery and that collection procedures will follow. Starting on this day, the agency will begin sending recovery notices specifying the reason for recovery, the amount, and the payment deadline, and will proceed step by step with reminders and compulsory collection procedures. If the debtor does not comply with the recovery notice, a payment demand will be issued with a deadline of at least 30 days, scheduled for February to March. If the debtor still fails to pay the advance child support despite the demand, an investigation into income and assets, including bank balances, and compulsory collection measures will be carried out between April and June. To facilitate this, the Child Support Agency will increase its collection staff from three to eleven this year.

Recovery notices for advance child support payments disbursed between January and June of this year are scheduled to be issued in July.
