Gyeonggi Province is promoting the "Climate Safe Shade Project," which creates shaded areas in frequently used spaces such as parks, bicycle paths, and parking lots, while simultaneously generating electricity.
On January 19, Gyeonggi Province announced that it has allocated a total of 20.1 billion won in special adjustment grants to 12 local governments, including Suwon City, to expand social overhead capital (SOC) that both responds to the climate crisis and enhances residents' daily convenience.
The "Climate Safe Shade" project involves installing canopies equipped with solar power generation functions in key residential areas, such as parks, sports facilities, public office parking lots, and bicycle paths. These facilities provide residents with shelters from heatwaves and rain, while local governments can reduce energy costs or generate revenue by selling electricity.
Based on this initiative, Gyeonggi Province plans to focus on establishing a sustainable, locally-circulating climate response system by expanding public RE100, enhancing energy self-sufficiency, and increasing carbon reduction effects.

In addition, Gyeonggi Province will promote the discovery of a "parking lot solar expansion model" that harmonizes with urban aesthetics, in line with the mandatory installation of solar panels in public parking lots.
Suwon City plans to propose a new climate response alternative within the city by installing solar-powered canopies that combine design and functionality at major parking lots, such as Yeongheung Arboretum and Sindae Lake.
Kim Yeonji, Director of the Energy Industry Division at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will take the lead in spreading public RE100 nationwide so that the Gyeonggi Province Climate Safe Shade Project can become a leading model for climate public facilities that simultaneously address resident convenience and energy transition."
