Not Slogans, but Responsibility... Former Councilor Kim Gyuhak’s Memoir Revives Daegu’s Spirit

Book Launch at Daegu EXCO on January 31
Memoir Capturing On-the-Ground Political Experience
A Focus on “Restoring Trust in Politics”

Kim Gyuhak, former three-term Daegu City Councilor, is meeting with citizens as he publishes his memoir, which contains his vision for Daegu’s future and the role of politics.

He has compiled his legislative experiences-facing the region’s challenges up close-into a single book, and intends to share his messages about “Daegu’s tomorrow” and “how politics can regain public trust.”

Kim’s book launch event will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, in Room 306 of EXCO Daegu.

This event is organized as the first public release of his memoir, which is based on his accumulated on-site experience and policy considerations.

This book goes beyond simply summarizing his political career. It directly confronts the question, “What should politics do?” at the heart of regional change, and seriously re-examines the role that local politics must play in citizens’ lives.

Kim also documents the process of experiencing problems in the field and seeking solutions, carefully suggesting the direction Daegu needs to take to regain its vitality.

In particular, the book reflects his determination not to turn away from the realities facing the region. It explores what changes citizens can actually feel in their daily lives, and considers what tasks politics must truly address.

Drawing on the issues he encountered and his accumulated legislative experience, Kim emphasizes that for politics to regain trust, it must be proven through “action” rather than “words,” and through “responsibility” rather than “slogans.”

The local political community is watching to see whether this publication will serve as an opportunity to re-examine Daegu’s vision and challenges in the “language of everyday life” rather than the “language of politics.”

In particular, Kim’s assertion that “it is solidarity, not revolution, that changes the world” serves as a reminder of the power of citizens and communities amid a political environment marked by conflict and division.

The book launch is also expected to go beyond a simple publication event, expanding points of contact with citizens and providing a platform for communication with the local community. The view is that when the concerns accumulated in the field are recorded and then returned to the language of citizens, political trust can gradually be restored.

A city does not grow through policy alone. Only when changes that citizens can feel accumulate does the future become reality. The question posed by the title “Daegu Dreamed by Kim Gyuhak” is clear.

What Daegu needs to breathe again is not grand slogans, but the belief that answers are found in the field and the sense of political responsibility to see them through to the end.
