The Gwangju Citizens' Nomination Committee announced on January 18 that the number of citizens who have joined the committee has surpassed 20,000.

This figure represents 1.6% of Gwangju's 1.2 million eligible voters. The committee expects that if this recruitment trend continues until January 23, the number of members will exceed 24,000, accounting for more than 2% of eligible voters.

More than 1,000 teenagers, including middle and high school students aged 14 and older, are also participating. The committee emphasized that this number is highly significant, as the opinions of young people are particularly important in the superintendent election.

Since the launch of the Gwangju Citizens' Nomination Committee, a different atmosphere from previous superintendent elections has been observed. The Gwangju Democratic Progressive Civic Education Superintendent Candidate Citizens' Nomination Committee is shifting the focus of the superintendent election toward policy-based debates. All three candidates who have registered with the Citizens' Nomination Committee are presenting their education policies. The first televised debate is scheduled to take place on January 22.

A representative of the Gwangju Citizens' Nomination Committee stated, "If candidate debates are held, the atmosphere of a policy-oriented election will become even more pronounced," adding, "We hope that the influence of the Gwangju Citizens' Nomination Committee for the superintendent election will extend to general elections as well."
