More Than the Combined Total of the EU, Russia, India, and Japan
Rising Demand in Service and Residential Sectors
As the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) industries accelerates, power generation capacity is emerging as a key indicator of national competitiveness. In this context, it was revealed that China's electricity consumption last year surpassed 10 trillion kWh for the first time in history.
On January 17 (local time), the National Energy Administration of China announced that the country's total electricity consumption in the previous year reached 10.3682 trillion kWh, up 5.0% from the year before. This is the first time a single country has exceeded 10 trillion kWh.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, China's electricity consumption is more than twice that of the United States and exceeds the combined total of the European Union (EU), Russia, India, and Japan.
By sector, electricity consumption in the tertiary industry rose 8.2% year-on-year to 1.9942 trillion kWh, while urban and rural residential electricity consumption increased 6.3% to 1.588 trillion kWh. These two areas accounted for 50% of the overall increase in electricity consumption, reflecting the impact of changes in the industrial structure.
In particular, electricity usage in the battery charging service sector surged 48.8% year-on-year, while the information transmission, software, and information technology (IT) service sector increased by 17.0%, driving the expansion of demand in the tertiary industry.
