Midnight Fire at Gwangju Apartment Forces Emergency Evacuation of Over 50 Residents

A fire broke out in an apartment complex in downtown Gwangju in the middle of the night, prompting dozens of residents to evacuate in an emergency.


According to the Gwangju Seobu Fire Station and other authorities on January 17, the fire occurred at around 11:57 p.m. the previous day in a unit on the seventh floor of an apartment building in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju.


After receiving a report, fire authorities dispatched personnel and equipment to the scene and managed to completely extinguish the blaze within 20 minutes, at around 12:17 a.m. on January 17.


Fortunately, there were no major casualties from the fire, but more than 50 residents, who had been sleeping late at night, were startled and evacuated the building. During the evacuation, three people suffered from smoke inhalation and complained of discomfort, but none were transported to the hospital.


The interior of the affected unit, measuring 74 square meters, was completely burned, resulting in property damage estimated at approximately 36.54 million won by the fire department.


The police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire and the specific extent of the damage.
