The police have launched an internal investigation into Chief Inspector Baek Haeryong, who has led the team investigating allegations of external pressure on customs drug investigations.
According to the National Police Agency on January 16, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has initiated an internal probe into Chief Inspector Baek. This follows a request for disciplinary action by the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office the previous day, citing "various violations of laws and regulations" as the reason for ending Baek's secondment.
Last month, Chief Inspector Baek distributed investigative materials submitted by a customs officer suspect to the media.
Chief Inspector Baek had been seconded to the joint investigation team at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office to investigate allegations of external pressure on customs drug investigations, but returned to the Hwagok Police Station in Seoul on January 14.
