Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) has introduced the Smart Intersection System at two major intersections within the city to alleviate traffic congestion on main roads.

The Smart Intersection System is an intelligent traffic management solution that utilizes advanced video analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to collect a variety of real-time intersection data, such as traffic volume, speed, vehicle type, queue length, and unexpected incidents. Based on the generated big data, it calculates the optimal signal and applies it to the signal cycle.
In particular, it is expected to be effective in easing traffic congestion and improving user convenience in urban areas with heavy vehicle congestion by operating customized signals.
The locations where the Smart Intersection System has been installed are Jangam Station three-way intersection and the intersection in front of St. Mary's Hospital, both of which have seen persistent civil complaints due to chronic traffic congestion. By precisely analyzing the traffic volume concentrated during rush hours, the system is expected to help relieve congestion and enable flexible signal operations.
An official from Uijeongbu City stated, "Through the Smart Intersection System, we will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also strive to enhance traffic safety at intersections through real-time monitoring."
