The court has dismissed the habeas corpus petition filed by Pastor Jun Kwanghoon of Sarang Jeil Church, who was detained on suspicion of being behind the disturbance at the Seoul Western District Court.
The 11th Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Choi Jeongin, rejected Pastor Jun's habeas corpus petition on the 15th.
Pastor Jun filed the petition on January 14, following the issuance of an arrest warrant on January 13 on charges of inciting unlawful entry into a special building.
The habeas corpus review is a procedure in which the court examines whether the arrest of a suspect during the investigation stage is lawful and whether it is necessary to maintain the detention. The court must interrogate the suspect and conduct evidence review within 48 hours of receiving the petition.
Pastor Jun is accused of encouraging his supporters to break into the Seoul Western District Court, destroy property, and assault police officers in the early morning of January 19 last year, immediately after the arrest of former President Yoon Sukyeol.
The police believe that Pastor Jun used religious faith to exert psychological control (gaslighting) and provided funds to close associates and conservative YouTubers to incite violence among the protesters.
