Strengthening Competitiveness of the Regional Secondary Battery Sector Expected

Pohang is solving the final puzzle of the "K-Battery" industry.

On January 15, Pohang City signed a "Joint Cooperation Agreement for the Development of Secondary Battery Wastewater Treatment Technology" in the main conference room at City Hall, in preparation for a technology development project aimed at treating secondary battery saline wastewater.

This agreement was established to create a joint cooperation system between the local government and participating companies, supporting future technology demonstration and on-site application prior to the selection for the "Secondary Battery Saline Wastewater Treatment Technology Development Project" announced by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment on December 19 of last year.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Director of Job and Economy Bureau of Pohang City, the Director of Climate and Environment Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, and representatives from 17 organizations, including the main companies leading the project: Bumwoo, Ecopro HN, Techwin, Hyolim ENI, U&U, and N-B.

Secondary battery saline wastewater is characterized by high salinity and high concentration, making public treatment difficult. Currently, each company is responding by installing individual treatment facilities such as the mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) evaporation and concentration method. However, due to the strengthening of domestic and international environmental regulations, increased social responsibility for environmental preservation, and rising industrial electricity rates, there are limitations to companies handling this issue on their own. In the long term, this also affects the cost competitiveness of the national secondary battery industry.

To address this, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment plans to promote a technology development project worth a total of 47.5 billion KRW over the next five years, focusing on two areas: the development of zero-discharge process technology for secondary battery saline wastewater and the development of public treatment technology for secondary battery saline wastewater, covering a total of five tasks.

Pohang, a city specializing in secondary battery materials, is home to a cluster of precursor and cathode material manufacturers. It is considered a region with a high need for proactive technology acquisition to prepare for the expected increase in saline wastewater generation as the industry expands.

The city has been preparing through initiatives such as planning services for saline wastewater treatment technology development and launching an expert task force. With this agreement, Pohang plans to continue administrative cooperation to ensure that effective technologies for saline wastewater treatment, which is a common challenge for local secondary battery companies, can be demonstrated and applied in the field.

Lee Sangyeop, Director of Job and Economy Bureau of Pohang City, stated, "Through this agreement, we will continue to provide the necessary administrative support for technology development and demonstration related to secondary battery saline wastewater treatment. Based on this, we will do our utmost to support the sustainable growth and global competitiveness of Pohang's specialized secondary battery cluster."
