Experts Woo Sungkyu, Jung Heon, and Jung Chulwon Appointed Through Open Recruitment
Strengthening the Troupes with Leaders Who Combine Expertise and Practical Experience
Gyeongsan City (Mayor Cho Hyunil) has appointed new leaders to guide the Gyeongsan City Arts Troupes in 2026: Woo Sungkyu as conductor of the City Choir, Jung Heon as conductor of the City Symphony Orchestra, and Jung Chulwon as artistic director of the City Theater Company.
These appointments were made through an open recruitment process that selected candidates with both professional expertise and practical experience suited to each troupe’s genre and operational direction. The aim is to strengthen the artistic competitiveness of the Gyeongsan City Arts Troupes and to expand cultural opportunities for citizens.
The selection process was conducted through open recruitment in accordance with the ‘Ordinance on the Establishment and Operation of Gyeongsan City Arts Troupes.’ Candidates were comprehensively evaluated through document screening and interviews for their artistic expertise, conducting and directing capabilities, and understanding of organizational management before being finally selected.
Woo Sungkyu, appointed as conductor of the City Choir, served as guest conductor for the Gyeongsan City Choir from May to December last year, gaining direct experience in both the management and performance aspects of the group.
He holds a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from Oklahoma City University and a Doctorate in Performance Studies (Choral Conducting) from Gwangju University Graduate School. With experience conducting public choirs and strong academic credentials, he is regarded as someone who can lead the choir to achieve both musical excellence and organizational balance.
He earned his Doctorate in Performance Studies (Choral Conducting) from Gwangju University Graduate School and, based on his experience with public choirs and academic expertise, is considered capable of guiding the choir to achieve both musical excellence and effective organizational management.
Jung Heon, appointed conductor of the City Symphony Orchestra, previously served as principal conductor of the Mokpo City Symphony Orchestra, where he successfully led regular and special performances. He also gained two years of experience managing an orchestra as conductor of the Ulsan Jung-gu Symphony Orchestra.
He completed a Master’s program in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, receiving systematic professional training, and is recognized for his ability to deliver stable performances and musical excellence.
Jung Chulwon, appointed as artistic director of the City Theater Company, has led the local theater scene as head of Hanullim Association and served as artistic director of the Daegu City Theater Company from 2020 to 2022, accumulating experience in managing public theater troupes.
He is currently a board member of the Daegu Theater Association and has broad experience in both cultural arts administration and creative production.
He is an award-winning theater director, having received the ‘Proud Korean Theater Person Award,’ and is recognized for his capabilities in both production and organizational management as an artistic director.
Cho Hyunil, Mayor of Gyeongsan City, stated, “By appointing artists with professional expertise in each genre through an open recruitment process, we are preparing for a new leap forward for the Gyeongsan City Arts Troupes. We hope to see our public arts troupes grow into a representative cultural institution of Gyeongsan through high-quality performances that engage our citizens.”
