Yeonggwang County in South Jeolla Province announced plans to operate a demonstration and exhibition field for new rice varieties, as a proactive measure in response to the phase-out of the Sindongjin rice variety.

The main purpose of operating the demonstration and exhibition field for new rice varieties is to cultivate the latest bred rice varieties in the local area, in order to discover varieties suitable for the region’s climate and soil, and to evaluate their resistance to pests and diseases as well as their productivity. This year, approximately 3,300 square meters will be used to cultivate and demonstrate three to four varieties, including Sindongjin No. 1, Hwanggeumyechan, and Jeonnam No. 13.

Examining each variety in detail: Sindongjin No. 1 (2024) has a genetic similarity of 95.3% to the original Sindongjin variety, is noted for its excellent taste, and demonstrates strong resistance to bacterial leaf blight, stripe disease, and bakanae disease, making it a promising alternative. Hwanggeumyechan (2023) is an intermediate type between non-glutinous and glutinous rice, featuring superior stickiness and taste, and is expected to be highly competitive in the market. Jeonnam No. 13, currently being developed by the Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services, is a medium-maturing variety characterized by short plant height and small grains, with excellent lodging resistance and resistance to bacterial leaf blight.

In particular, the Yeonggwang County Agricultural Technology Center plans to comprehensively evaluate the growth characteristics, pest and disease resistance, productivity, and grain quality of each variety through this demonstration field operation, and to select varieties suitable for the Yeonggwang region to provide valuable information to local farmers.

Jeong Jaeuk, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "Through this demonstration field operation, we aim to discover high-quality rice varieties with strong resistance to pests and diseases that are suitable for our county, and we will continue our research and support to help farmers effectively respond to climate change and changes in the agricultural environment."
