On January 15, Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will establish and operate a "Public Official Impersonation Fraud Reporting Center" within its civil complaint consultation call center, in response to a surge in scams targeting small business owners by individuals impersonating public officials.
The typical method of public official impersonation fraud involves presenting forged official documents, employee IDs, or business cards, and then requesting proxy purchases of goods. The perpetrators induce victims to transfer money to fraudulent bank accounts, promising to settle both the payment for the goods and a service fee in a single transaction.
To prevent such damage, the city has consolidated previously department-specific reporting channels into this centralized center. Once a report is received, the Job and Economy Division will promptly verify the facts and respond to the reporter.
A city official urged, "If you receive any suspicious or dubious contact, please contact the reporting center immediately."
