Lead Prosecutor in "Unpaid Severance Pay" Case Also Summoned as Reference Witness
Ahn Gwonsup, the Special Prosecutor investigating allegations of covering up the Coupang investigation and unpaid severance pay, is arriving at the permanent special prosecutor's office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on December 31 last year.
The special prosecutor team led by Ahn Gwonsup, which is investigating allegations of unpaid severance pay for Coupang's daily workers, has summoned the Ministry of Employment and Labor official who was in charge at the time of the company's work rule changes and their approval.
On January 15, the special prosecutor's team called in former Director Kim of the Labor Standards Policy Division at the Ministry of Employment and Labor as a reference witness for questioning.
Coupang is suspected of having changed its work rules to the disadvantage of employees in May 2023. At that time, Coupang revised its regulations regarding severance pay from "excluding only periods when daily workers who have worked for more than one year have less than 15 working hours per week" to "applying only to those who have worked for more than one year and have at least 15 working hours per week."
However, the Seoul Eastern District Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, which reviewed this change, determined at the time that there was no problem with the new regulation and approved the amendment.
Additionally, on the same day, the special prosecutor's team again summoned Shin Kahyun, the prosecutor from the Bucheon District Office who was in charge of the initial unpaid severance pay case, as a reference witness. This is the third time since the first questioning on December 30 last year.
