Nuclear Export Information Now Powered by AI... Launch of "Nuclear ChatGPT"

Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Nuclear Power Export Industry Association Launch NU-GPT

Nuclear Export Information Now Powered by AI... Launch of "Nuclear ChatGPT"

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will support the export of small and medium-sized nuclear power companies through conversational artificial intelligence (AI) technology. On January 15, the ministry announced that it would hold a launch event at Lotte Hotel Seoul for 'NU-GPT,' an AI-based integrated export information system.

NU-GPT is a compound word combining Nuclear and ChatGPT (OpenAI's chatbot service), and is a conversational AI service specialized in nuclear power exports. The ministry designated the Nuclear Power Export Industry Association as the implementing agency and invested a total of 550 million won in the development of NU-GPT.

The developer of NU-GPT is Mcunik. Mcunik explained that it utilized ChatGPT, Google's Gemma, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology for nuclear market information search, among others. Gemma is a lightweight large language model (LLM) based on Gemini technology. RAG is a technology that builds a separate database (DB) and refers to it to generate answers, in order to alleviate hallucinations in AI responses.

NU-GPT has enhanced its expertise by learning from overseas bidding and requirement information, order plans, global market news, and more than 10,000 reports from international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Nuclear Association (WNA), accumulated since 2022.

Until now, domestic small and medium-sized nuclear power companies have struggled to analyze the vast amount of overseas market data. The ministry explained that, going forward, companies will be able to gain in-depth market information and insights simply by asking NU-GPT straightforward questions.

Recently, due to a surge in power demand driven by the expansion of the AI industry and the need to address the climate crisis, demand for new nuclear power plant construction and improvement of aging facilities is increasing, especially in the United States and Europe. In the past, the global nuclear power market was a closed structure centered on a few suppliers, but now, as the existing supply chain has weakened, it is considered an opportune time for Korean companies to enter overseas markets.

The ministry plans to add new features in the second half of the year, including market demand forecasting based on overseas bidding information and customized support packages tailored to company characteristics and export stages.
