Five centuries of history that once lay dormant on paper are now being vividly brought to life through digital technology. The National Museum of the Joseon Dynasty Annals, located in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, is launching a large-scale project to transform historical records into future-oriented content.

On January 14, the National Museum of the Joseon Dynasty Annals announced plans to construct a “Digital Oesago (Archive)” within the Odaesan National Park museum complex in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province, by 2028. The project will invest a total of 19.4 billion won to build a facility with a total floor area of 2,795 square meters. The design will be completed this year, with full-scale construction set to begin next year.

The new Digital Oesago will be more than just a storage facility. It will serve as a “data vault” for the permanent digital preservation of national treasure-level documentary heritage such as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the Uigwe, while also providing an immersive experience space for visitors to engage with these records in three dimensions. The museum plans to install large-scale media facades and other features to transform history, which previously existed only as text, into an overwhelming visual experience.

This initiative is powered by the successful launch of the Annals Museum in May of last year. As the first national museum in southeastern Gangwon, it attracted over 86,000 visitors within just eight months of opening, quickly emerging as a key cultural hub for the region. The Digital Oesago will build on this momentum, serving as a central pillar in a cultural tourism belt connecting Odaesan, Daegwallyeong, and the East Sea region.

On this day, Heo Min, Administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration, will visit the construction site for an on-site inspection. He stated, “The Digital Oesago will be an innovative hub that simultaneously addresses the preservation and utilization of documentary heritage,” adding, “We will spare no effort in supporting job creation and boosting tourism in the region.”
