Truck Driver in His 70s Booked on Charges of Fatal Accident
In Muan, South Jeolla Province, an early morning accident occurred on a one-way, single-lane road, where local residents walking along the shoulder were struck and killed by a 1-ton truck.
The Muan Police Station in South Jeolla Province announced on January 13 that they have booked a man in his 70s, identified as Mr. A, on suspicion of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents (resulting in death), and are currently investigating the case.
According to the police, at around 7:10 a.m. that day, Mr. A was driving a 1-ton truck on a one-way, single-lane road in Sinjeong-ri, Haeje-myeon, Muan County, South Jeolla Province, when he allegedly struck two women-a woman in her 60s, identified as Ms. B, and a woman in her 70s, identified as Ms. C-who were walking along the shoulder of the road.
Ms. B and Ms. C sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital, but ultimately passed away. Investigations revealed that they were neighbors living nearby and, at the time of the accident, were walking closer to the road due to the narrow shoulder when the incident occurred.
The accident site was an S-shaped curve, and it was determined that Mr. A failed to notice the pedestrians while making a left turn. In a police statement, Mr. A said, "It was early in the morning and dark, so I could not see the pedestrians."
At the time, Mr. A was neither under the influence of alcohol nor driving without a license, and no evidence of speeding was found.
The police plan to conduct a thorough investigation into the exact cause of the accident, based on Mr. A's statement and CCTV footage from around the scene.
