Professor Myungyong Kim of the Department of Law at Changwon National University has announced his candidacy for the Gyeongnam Changwon Special Mayor election in the 9th nationwide local elections scheduled for June.
On January 12, Professor Kim held a press conference at the Changwon City Hall Press Center, stating, "As a citizen rather than a politician, and as someone who has taught law, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot simply stand by and watch the current state of Changwon," and officially declared his candidacy for mayor of Changwon.
He said, "Changwon is not in a normal state right now. In this unprecedented situation of a mayoral vacancy, citizens are questioning whether the administration is functioning properly."
He emphasized, "Changwon led the industrialization of South Korea, grew through the hard work of countless engineers and workers, and still retains its potential today. However, Changwon is now adrift like a ship that has lost its direction."

Professor Kim reiterated his reason for running, saying, "What matters more than political experience is adherence to the law and principles, and a sense of responsibility to the citizens. That is why I decided to run."
He pledged, "I will not be a power-driven politician, but a responsible administrator. I will build the administration on the foundation of law and principles, create policies based on the lives of citizens, and be a mayor who takes full responsibility for the outcomes of decisions."
He also promised, "Rather than presenting grand visions, I will start by changing daily life. I will make Changwon a city where parents feel they can continue raising their children, where small business owners feel the city stands by them, where young people believe they do not have to leave, and where seniors feel respected."
Professor Kim stated, "What Changwon needs now is not political slogans, but the restoration of a stalled administration. I will make administrative procedures transparent, disclose the policy-making process to citizens, and create a city government that reduces unnecessary conflicts and lawsuits."
He further pledged, "I will not be a mayor who fights well, but a mayor who resolves issues well-a reliable mayor who does not escalate problems."
Additionally, he said, "What Changwon needs now is not political maneuvering, but a sense of responsibility to restore normal administration. I will compete with policies, prove myself through my attitude, and be evaluated by results."
In conclusion, he appealed, "I do not wish to be a showy or eloquent mayor, but one whom people can trust and rely on. Please entrust me with the duty and responsibility to make Changwon a stable city once again, a city that its residents can be proud of."
