Police Apply for Arrest Warrant for Former Corrections Director Shin Yonghae over Martial Law Detention Space Inspection

The police have applied for an arrest warrant for Shin Yonghae, former Director General of the Correctional Bureau at the Ministry of Justice, in connection with allegations that the Ministry of Justice attempted to secure additional detention space in correctional facilities during the 12·3 Martial Law.

The Special Investigation Headquarters for the Three Major Special Prosecutions of the National Police Agency applied for an arrest warrant for Shin to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the afternoon of January 12, on charges including major involvement in insurrection.


On January 6, the Special Investigation Headquarters sent investigators to the office of the Special Prosecutor for Insurrection at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office to secure related materials. The Special Prosecutor for Insurrection identified that, during the period of martial law, Shin checked the detention capacity of correctional facilities in the Seoul metropolitan area under the direction of former Minister of Justice Park Sungjae.


It has been reported that Shin actually informed former Minister Park that "approximately 3,600 people could be accommodated."
