Just 1,000 Won to Your Doorstep... Gwangsan District's "1,000-Won Taxi" Continues This Year

Subsidy Increased to 25,000 Won
670 Residents in Five Rural and Outlying Districts Benefit

Call and it comes, and the fare is just 1,000 won. The "1,000-Won Taxi" service in Gwangsan District, Gwangju will continue its operations this year.

On January 12, Gwangsan District announced that it will continue operating the demand-responsive "1,000-Won Taxi" this year to ease the transportation burden for residents in rural and outlying areas with limited access to public transportation. Under this program, users who register in advance can call a taxi whenever needed and use the service for only 1,000 won per ride.

Gwangsan District has expanded the scope of support, taking into account the recent increase in base taxi fares and the long intervals between public transportation in rural areas. In Gwangju, the base taxi fare was raised from 4,300 won to 4,800 won for the first 1.7 kilometers as of October last year. As a result, there have been ongoing concerns about increased mobility costs for seniors and people with disabilities.

The 1,000-Won Taxi operates in 36 villages across five districts: Imgok, Samdo, Bonryang, Pyeongdong, and Donggok-dong. The program supports approximately 670 people, including seniors aged 65 and over and people with disabilities. Each eligible person receives two vouchers per month.

Starting this year, the subsidy per voucher has been increased from 20,000 won to 25,000 won. Users still only need to pay 1,000 won per ride, as before.

Gwangsan District expects this program to help residents in transportation-vulnerable areas travel independently in their daily lives and to contribute to reducing isolation by encouraging outdoor activities.

A Gwangsan District official stated, "The 1,000-Won Taxi is a program that genuinely guarantees mobility rights for transportation-vulnerable groups," adding, "We will continue to improve the system to further reduce residents' transportation costs."
