The Gwangju Association for the Physically Disabled announced on January 12 that it paid respects at the May 18 National Cemetery to mark the New Year of 2026.
On January 9, about 30 people attended the ceremony held at the May 18 National Cemetery in Unjeong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, including Nam Hanwoo, the recently inaugurated president of the association, as well as Kim Kihwan of Dong-gu, Kim Heesang of Seo-gu, Kim Sangseop of Nam-gu, and Kim Byungki of Buk-gu-chapter presidents from the five local districts-along with executives, staff, and members.
The participants honored the noble spirit of the May 18 victims by holding a banner in front of the Gate of Democracy that read, "The sacrifices of that day made today's Republic of Korea." They then laid flowers and offered incense in front of the memorial tower, paying tribute to those who gave their lives for democracy and pledging, in the spirit of the New Year, to take the lead in improving the welfare and protecting the rights of people with disabilities in the region.
