Automatic Enrollment for All Gyeonggi Residents
Compensation for Frostbite, Hypothermia, and Slipping on Icy Roads
Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Donghwan) has launched a campaign to promote the 'Gyeonggi Climate Insurance' implemented by Gyeonggi Province, aiming to support citizens suffering health damages caused by the climate crisis.
This insurance covers all residents of Gyeonggi Province, including Goyang citizens, registered foreigners, and overseas Koreans with foreign nationality. Starting from April 11, 2025, all eligible individuals will be automatically enrolled and can receive compensation in the event of damage without any separate registration process.
The main coverage includes a payment of 100,000 won for diagnoses of cold-related illnesses such as frostbite or hypothermia during winter. In particular, if a weather warning such as a cold wave or heavy snowfall is issued and a weather-related injury (including traffic accidents) like slipping on icy roads results in a diagnosis requiring four weeks or more of treatment, an accident consolation payment of 300,000 won will be provided. A major advantage is that compensation can be received even if the individual has other private insurance policies.
To claim the insurance payout, applicants must submit a claim form, a copy of their resident registration, a copy of their bank account, and a medical certificate (or doctor's note) to the designated insurance company (Hanwha General Insurance) within three years of the accident date. Applications can be submitted via fax, email (gginsure@jinsonsa.co.kr), or postal mail.
In particular, when applying for the weather warning-related accident consolation payment, the initial medical record describing the accident details must be additionally submitted. For email applications, it is also possible to conveniently apply by sending a photo via mobile text message.
A city official stated, "We hope this insurance will serve as a strong support for citizens when they experience unexpected accidents caused by climate disasters," adding, "We will continue to actively promote the program to ensure that no eligible individuals miss out on benefits simply because they are unaware of them."
Meanwhile, 'Gyeonggi Climate Insurance' also provides a diagnosis benefit of 100,000 won each for summer heat-related illnesses or for specific infectious diseases such as malaria and tsutsugamushi, in addition to cold-related illnesses.
