[Tomorrow's Weather] Heavy Snow and Severe Cold... Up to 5cm Per Hour in Jeolla and Jeju

On Sunday, January 11, heavy snowfall is expected to continue, mainly in the southern regions and Jeju Island.


In the afternoon, most of the snow will stop in Chungcheongnam-do, Jeolla region, and the western inland area of Gyeongsangnam-do, while Jeju Island will continue to see snow until the early morning of January 12.


Daejeon, Sejong, and southern Chungcheongbuk-do will experience snowfall between the morning and midday. Gyeongsangbuk-do's southern inland and the rest of Gyeongsangnam-do, except for its western inland, will see snow between the morning and afternoon. The southern coastal area of Gyeonggi-do will have snowfall in the afternoon.


The expected snowfall is as follows: 5 to 15 centimeters (with some areas exceeding 20 centimeters) in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, mountainous areas of Jeju Island, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo; 3 to 8 centimeters in the southern coastal area of Chungcheongnam-do and the western inland of Gyeongsangnam-do; 2 to 7 centimeters in Daejeon, Sejong, Chungcheongnam-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, the southeastern coast of Jeollanam-do, and the mid-mountainous areas of Jeju Island; 1 to 5 centimeters along the coast of Jeju Island; and less than 1 centimeter in the Seoul metropolitan area.


The expected precipitation amounts are: 5 to 20 millimeters in Jeju Island, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo; 5 to 15 millimeters in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, and Jeollabuk-do; 5 to 10 millimeters in the Chungcheong region; and less than 5 millimeters in the southeastern coast of Jeollanam-do and the five West Sea islands.


In particular, from early morning to midday, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and the mountainous and mid-mountainous areas of Jeju Island are expected to see heavy snowfall at a rate of 1 to 3 centimeters per hour, with some areas exceeding 5 centimeters per hour.

Severe cold will also return.


The morning low temperature is forecast to be between -15 and -3 degrees Celsius, and the daytime high between -7 and 4 degrees Celsius, which is lower than the seasonal average (morning -12 to 0 degrees, daytime 0 to 8 degrees).


Cold wave advisories have been issued for the central region, Jeollabuk-do, the coast of Jeollanam-do, the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, and some inland and mountainous areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Morning temperatures will drop sharply by about 5 to 8 degrees compared to the previous day, making it extremely cold. Strong winds will further lower the perceived temperature.


Fine dust concentrations are expected to remain at a 'good' level nationwide.


Wave heights are expected to be 1.0 to 4.0 meters in the East Sea, 1.0 to 5.0 meters in the West Sea, and 0.5 to 3.5 meters in the South Sea.


In the outer seas (about 200 kilometers from the coastline), wave heights are expected to reach 2.0 to 5.5 meters in the East Sea, 1.5 to 5.0 meters in the West Sea, and 2.0 to 5.0 meters in the South Sea.
