Trump's Annexation Ambitions Called 'Colonialism'
"Both the U.S. and Denmark Are Imperialist Powers," Criticized
Donald Trump, President of the United States, has revealed ambitions to annex Greenland, a Danish territory. In response, world-renowned pop star Hera Bjork (60) has expressed her support for Greenland's independence.
According to European media outlet Euronews on January 9, Iceland's "national singer" Bjork posted on Instagram to express solidarity with her neighbors in Greenland. She criticized both the United States and Denmark as imperialist powers and voiced her support for Greenland's independence.
She wrote, "The mere thought that my Greenlandic compatriots might go from one brutal colonial ruler to another is utterly horrifying. I wish blessings upon all Greenlanders fighting for independence." She added, "It was truly fortunate that Iceland was able to break away from Denmark in 1944, and we did not lose our language (otherwise, my children would be speaking Danish now)." Iceland, like Greenland, has a history of being a Danish colony.
Bjork also pointed out the Danish government's past implementation of brutal policies, such as forced contraception procedures on indigenous Greenlandic women. She criticized, "Denmark treats Greenlanders like second-class citizens."
From the late 1960s for about 30 years, Denmark carried out intrauterine device (IUD) insertions on approximately 4,500 Inuit women in Greenland to curb the indigenous population growth, without properly informing them or obtaining their consent. This incident became a public issue two years ago when around 150 Inuit women filed a lawsuit against the Danish government, claiming their human rights were violated by non-consensual procedures.
Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, met directly with the victims of forced contraception last September and issued an official apology, after the need to improve relations with Greenland arose following President Trump's renewed territorial ambitions for Greenland after the start of his second term.
Bjork stated, "Colonialism has always sent chills down my spine," and continued, "I shudder at the thought of Greenlanders moving from Denmark, a colonial power, to the United States, another colonial power. Greenlanders, declare your independence." President Trump has repeatedly argued that acquiring Greenland is necessary, citing its strategic importance to U.S. national security.
Meanwhile, Bjork, considered a "living legend" of electronic pop, has also worked as an actress, winning the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 for her role in Danish director Lars von Trier's film "Dancer in the Dark." She also performed in South Korea in 2008.
