Chuncheon City Becomes First in Gangwon to Receive Presidential Citation for Outstanding National Statistics

On January 9, Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Yook Donghan) received the Presidential Citation for outstanding contributions to statistical work in 2025, becoming the first among the 18 cities and counties of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province to receive this honor.

The National Data Agency selected 25 metropolitan and basic local governments across the country that had successfully conducted large-scale nationwide statistical surveys and presented them with awards such as the Presidential Citation and Ministerial Awards. Among the basic local governments, only two, including Chuncheon City, received the Presidential Citation.

Chuncheon City has been operating a stable statistics situation room led by the Deputy Mayor to ensure the accuracy of national statistics, such as the Population and Housing Census and the Economic Census, which form the basis of national policy. The city has also consistently improved working conditions for statistical surveyors. These efforts have been recognized for producing excellent results in areas such as the recruitment of surveyors and the accuracy of statistical outcomes.

Recognizing these achievements, the National Data Agency (formerly Statistics Korea) designated Chuncheon City as the nation’s only pilot region for tablet PC-based surveys early last year, which led to this Presidential Citation. Considering the importance of statistical data, the government plans to gradually expand the tablet PC-based survey, piloted in Chuncheon City, nationwide in the future.

Prior to the award ceremony, Mayor Yook Donghan held a tea meeting with Ahn Hyungjun, Commissioner of the National Data Agency, to discuss Chuncheon City’s AI Leading City policy and strategies for the strategic use of regional statistical data.

During the meeting, Chuncheon City shared its plans to further develop regional statistical data accumulated across administration, industry, and daily life by linking it to AI policies and strengthening cooperation with the government. As a city actively implementing the AI Leading City policy, Chuncheon City plans to place even greater emphasis this year on securing statistical data, one of the most crucial resources in the AI industry.

Mayor Yook Donghan stated, “This Presidential Citation was made possible not only by our city administration but also by the active cooperation of our citizens in statistical surveys,” adding, “We will also actively pursue independent statistical initiatives that benefit our citizens.”
