"North Korea's Participation in International Sports Is Desirable"
National Security Advisor Wi Sunglak stated that the government is "paying close attention" to the possibility of North Korea sending a delegation of athletes to the Asian Games, which will be held in September in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan. In November of last year, Choson Sinbo, the official newspaper of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, reported that North Korea would be sending a large delegation of athletes to the Asian Games.
During a briefing at the Chunchugwan press center at the presidential office on the 9th, Advisor Wi was asked whether there would be any areas of cooperation if North Korea sends a large delegation to the Asian Games in September. He responded, "We are aware of such events taking place in September," and confirmed the government's awareness of the situation.
Advisor Wi further explained, "Exchange in the field of sports is relatively less challenging," adding, "I believe it is desirable for North Korea to participate and engage on the international stage, and I expect that Japan, as the host country, will approach this with a similar perspective."
However, regarding whether the issue of North Korea's participation will be discussed at the Korea-Japan summit scheduled for the 13th and 14th, he said, "Nothing has been decided."
Advisor Wi also stated, "Various consultations are underway between Korea and Japan to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, build trust, and promote peace and stability," adding, "In that context, there may be opportunities to discuss these matters at upcoming events."
