Archbishop Chung Soon-taek, head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul, presided over the funeral mass for the late actor Ahn Sung-ki at Myeongdong Cathedral on the morning of January 9, praying for his eternal rest.

Approximately 600 people, including the bereaved family, as well as figures and representatives from the film and arts communities, attended the funeral mass to bid farewell to the late actor, who was known as a national star.

In his homily, Archbishop Chung said, "Brother Ahn Sung-ki, Apostle John, was a national actor loved by all, a true star who was humble and of outstanding character," and added, "He devoted his life to loving and serving Korean cinema, bringing laughter and inspiration to the people during difficult times."

He continued, "Although we earnestly hoped for his recovery, God has called our brother to His embrace," offering words of comfort to the bereaved family, members of the film industry, and all who loved the deceased.

Archbishop Chung also recalled an episode in which actor Ahn Sung-ki actively participated in the Church’s pro-life activities, stating, "Despite social opposition, his willingness to serve as a pro-life ambassador was a difficult decision rooted in obedience to the Church and his love for life."

He further reflected on the late actor’s connection to the Church, recalling that he received the sacrament of marriage at Myeongdong Cathedral and consistently participated in church events, saying, "Through not only his films but also his life of faith and sharing, he demonstrated the value of respect for humanity."
