Coast Guard Urges Public to Avoid Coastal Rocks and Tetrapods

The Coast Guard has entered emergency mode as strong winds and high waves are expected off the coast of Wando, South Jeolla Province.

The Wando Coast Guard announced on January 9 that, in accordance with the "Coastal Accident Safety Management Regulations," it has issued a "Warning" level alert under the Coastal Safety Accident Risk Forecast System, effective from January 10, due to expected worsening weather conditions.

The Coastal Safety Accident Risk Forecast System is a policy that notifies the public in advance of potential dangers by categorizing risk levels as "Attention-Warning-Alert" when there is a concern that safety accidents may occur continuously or repeatedly due to adverse weather or natural disasters. The aim is to prevent maritime accidents and promote safety.

Starting from January 10, when the warning is issued, the Wando Coast Guard will significantly strengthen patrol activities at major ports, harbors, and areas at high risk of accidents-such as tidal flats, coastal rocks, and tetrapods-within its jurisdiction until the high seas warning is lifted.

In particular, the Coast Guard plans to thoroughly inspect life-saving equipment for any malfunctions to ensure immediate deployment in the event of an accident, making every effort to prevent maritime safety incidents.

A Coast Guard official urged, "We ask coastal visitors to check weather updates frequently, refrain from entering high-risk areas such as coastal rocks and tetrapods, and strictly follow safety guidelines."
