On January 8, Mayor Kim Donggeun visited major sites for green infrastructure expansion in the city to directly inspect their progress. This inspection aimed to review the achievements of the "Urban Forest Project," a key initiative of the 8th popularly elected administration, and to ensure that citizens are provided with accessible spaces for relaxation in their daily lives without any setbacks.

The sites inspected included: the Jangam-dong Outdoor Garden, the Yonghyeon Industrial Complex Buffer Green Walkway and Garo Forest Path Development Project, and the Minlak-dong Sensory Rest Area.

Transforming Illegal Farmland in Jangam-dong into an Outdoor Garden within the Community

The first site visited, the "Jangam-dong Outdoor Garden," was a plot previously plagued by illegal cultivation that has now been restored with a 500 million KRW investment from the national budget.

The city has planted native tree species and created a barrier-free walking path, transforming the area into a space where everyone can enjoy nature without limitations. The city plans to continue phased improvements for the remaining land in the future.

Green transformation has also begun at industrial sites. In the Yonghyeon Industrial Complex area, a 440-meter themed garden and deck road have been established.

Through the "Yonghyeon Industrial Complex Garo Forest Path Development Project," Uijeongbu City has addressed issues such as blocked storm drains and flooding caused by accumulated fallen leaves, as well as reduced accident risks during commuting hours. The city has also improved the safety and comfort of the walking environment by addressing inconveniences caused by exposed tree roots and managing diseases and pests such as the sycamore lace bug.

Transforming Idle Land into a Rest Area: The Minlak-dong "Sensory Rest Area"

The "Sensory Rest Area" established at 776-9 and 820-6 Minlak-dong is a community-based green space expansion project utilizing idle urban land, covering a total area of approximately 7,256 square meters. Designed to resemble an outdoor caf?, it provides an environment suitable for relaxation and extended stays.

In the first half of this year, the city plans to complete the final third section by constructing an additional 225-meter walkway and pocket rest areas, thereby finishing the entire project. Upon completion, citizens in the Minlak-dong area are expected to benefit from accessible relaxation spaces within their neighborhood.

In addition to the sites inspected, the city is also pursuing the development of green and forest spaces accessible to citizens.

The Surak Mountain "Train Rock Observatory and Rest Area" has improved the forest environment by reinforcing safety facilities, expanding rest areas, and enhancing scenic viewpoints, ensuring that citizens can use these spaces safely and comfortably.

Furthermore, the "Jangam Forest Neulpum-gil" trail, part of the Jangam Arboretum development project, features a variety of trees such as Euonymus, Burning Bush, Japanese Kerria, and Pink Velvet, creating a walkway that showcases seasonal changes. The city plans to initiate a basic planning study for the establishment of the Jangam Arboretum in 2026, preparing for phased project implementation.

Additionally, the "Ja-il-dong Ecological Village Nuri-gil Development Project" was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 2026 Greenbelt Resident Support Project, securing a total project budget of 780 million KRW. This will be used to improve living conditions and create ecological rest spaces within the greenbelt area.

An official from Uijeongbu City stated, "We will continue to steadily implement projects aimed at making Uijeongbu a city where people want to stay and enjoy both nature and relaxation, and we will advance the Urban Forest Project so that citizens can experience its benefits in their daily lives."
