"You're Our Hero": Foreigners Lost on Bukhansan Send Handwritten Letters to 119 Rescue Team

Foreigners and other individuals who were rescued after becoming lost and stranded on Bukhansan Mountain have been sharing heartwarming stories by expressing their gratitude to 119 rescue personnel.

According to the Gyeonggi Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters on January 9, four Singaporean nationals lost their way while descending Bukhansan Mountain without lighting equipment on the evening of November 7 last year. They became stranded near the Yaksuam Shelter, unable to go up or down.


Mountain rescue team members from the Goyang Fire Station, who were dispatched for another rescue operation at the time, discovered the group during their search. They provided thermal protection and guided them safely down the mountain.


After returning to their home country, the rescued individuals sent a handwritten thank you letter to the Goyang Fire Station, expressing, "Thank you for being our light in a dangerous moment." The letter also included the words "Thank you" written in Korean and the phrase "You are our HERO."


Meanwhile, a man in his 50s who was stranded on Gukmangbong Peak in Pocheon on December 30 last year was also rescued by a fire department helicopter and later posted a message of gratitude on the Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters website.


He wrote, "That day became the day I died and was born again," and added, "I want to say that the 119 rescue personnel who saved my life are doing the most rewarding and precious work in the world."


Kang Daehoon, head of the Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "I am proud of our personnel who responded quickly and with dedication even in emergency situations," and added, "We will do our utmost to protect the lives and safety of our residents."
