Diagnosed with Chronic E. Coli Infection
"Body Has Adapted Due to Prolonged Exposure"
A woman living in Florida, United States, has been diagnosed with a possible infection of antibiotic-resistant E. coli after consuming raw meat daily. If she contracts another illness, it may become impossible to treat her in the future. However, she insists on continuing to eat raw meat.
On January 7 (local time), the New York Post reported the story of Wendy Marshall, who runs a tattoo shop in Florida. Marshall has a unique eating habit: she consumes 2 pounds (about 900g) of raw meat every day. She eats thick cuts of beef and steak while they are still visibly bloody.
She also appeared on the American cable channel TLC's program "My Strange Addiction." Marshall expressed her fondness for raw meat, saying, "I like to tear the meat right off the bone."
Marshall explained that she developed this eating habit as a child, eating raw meat with her grandmother. She recalled, "I used to eat raw meat while talking with my grandmother about how things were going." She added, "I understand that eating raw meat is not socially accepted. People sometimes feel nauseated or look at me strangely, but I don't care."
However, medical professionals have advised Marshall to refrain from consuming raw meat. This recommendation came after a recent health checkup revealed a chronic E. coli infection through a stool test.
The medical team who conducted the examination told Marshall, "This condition can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever," but also analyzed, "Since you show no symptoms, it appears your body has already adapted to the infection over a long period."
It was further reported that the E. coli strain infecting Marshall is likely resistant to nearly all antibiotics. This means there is a risk that she may not be able to be treated with antibiotics if she contracts another disease.
Marshall stated, "I won't stop eating raw meat," but added, "Instead, I will only eat grass-fed beef and will completely avoid ground meat."
