On January 8, Jeollanam-do Province and the Jeollanam-do Office of Education announced a joint declaration for the great integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam and the great transformation of education.
Governor Kim Youngrok and Superintendent of Education Kim Daejung held a meeting at the provincial office that day, where they agreed on the necessity of educational integration following the promotion of administrative integration between Gwangju and Jeonnam, and discussed educational innovation measures and a special legislative bill.
In particular, they shared the view that the launch of the (tentatively named) Gwangju-Jeonnam Special City, led by the region to overcome the crisis of regional extinction and become a new axis of growth for South Korea, is a mission of the times. They signed the "Joint Declaration for the Great Integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam and the Great Transformation of Education."
The joint declaration states that the provincial Office of Education fully supports the great integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam and will work closely to ensure the successful establishment of the integrated special city. It also includes the participation of the Office of Education as a key entity in the administrative integration and the drafting of a special legislative bill on matters related to the field of education.
Governor Kim Youngrok emphasized, "I thank Superintendent Kim Daejung for his support and participation, and I will strive to ensure that the administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam becomes a foundation not only for local residents but also for educational innovation and the cultivation of future talent."
Superintendent Kim Daejung stated, "I will actively cooperate so as not to hinder the cause of the great integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam," adding, "Since education values diversity, the integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam can create even greater synergy."
