Including Aliexpress and Temu

The People Power Party has called for a parliamentary investigation into the overall issue of personal information leaks, including incidents involving Coupang and the three major telecommunications companies-SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus.

On January 8, Kwon Gyutaek, the party’s Senior Spokesperson for the Floor, and other deputy floor leaders of the People Power Party submitted a “request for a parliamentary investigation into the status of personal information leaks, hacking of major government computer networks, information leakage incidents, and overseas transfer of personal data, as well as measures to prevent recurrence” to the National Assembly’s legislative office.

This action aims to comprehensively review issues such as practical compensation, incident response systems, and remedial measures in connection with recent high-profile personal information leak incidents involving Coupang and others. The investigation will also include a review of personal data protection policies covering the storage, use, and overseas transfer of domestic personal information by foreign companies such as Aliexpress and Temu.

Assemblywoman Kang Sunyoung explained, “The investigation will directly examine whether practical compensation for damages has been implemented following large-scale personal information leaks and assess its effectiveness. It will also include a review of follow-up measures by relevant ministries, an investigation into the overall personal information protection policies regarding the storage, use, and overseas transfer of domestic personal data by foreign companies, and finally, an assessment of the current measures in place.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Korea submitted its own request for a parliamentary investigation into the Coupang customer information leak incident on December 31. Through this investigation, the party intends to thoroughly examine, at the National Assembly level, a range of Coupang-related issues, including personal information leaks, allegations of unfair trade practices, deaths from overwork, results of tax audits, and monopoly controversies.
