Hyosung Heavy Industries Surpasses 10 Trillion Won in Cumulative Ultra-High Voltage Transformer Production

After 10 Trillion Won in Circuit Breakers, Transformers Reach New Milestone
Changwon Plant Sets Unique National Record as a Single Facility
Expanding Technology from 154kV to 765kV and HVDC

The Hyosung Heavy Industries Changwon Plant has surpassed a cumulative production value of 10 trillion won in ultra-high voltage transformers. Following its achievement earlier in 2024 as the first in the domestic industry to exceed a cumulative production value of 10 trillion won in circuit breakers, the plant has now set another new record.

On the 8th, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that on the previous day, the cumulative production value of ultra-high voltage transformers at its Changwon Plant in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, exceeded 10 trillion won, and a commemorative ceremony was held. The Changwon Plant is the only facility in Korea where both ultra-high voltage transformer and circuit breaker production values have each surpassed 10 trillion won.

Hyosung Heavy Industries began producing 154kV ultra-high voltage transformers in 1969, marking the first such development in Korea. The cumulative production value surpassed 1 trillion won in 2002, reached 5 trillion won in 2014, and achieved 10 trillion won in January 2024. For circuit breakers, production began in 1977, with the cumulative production value reaching 1 trillion won in 1997, exceeding 5 trillion won in 2013, and surpassing 10 trillion won in November 2024. Both transformers and circuit breakers have accumulated long-term production records.

The Changwon Plant is regarded as a core hub for the production of ultra-high voltage power equipment in Korea. After developing 154kV and 345kV ultra-high voltage transformers, the plant independently developed a 765kV ultra-high voltage transformer in 1992, becoming the sixth in the world and the first in Korea to do so. This marked the full-scale localization of ultra-high voltage power equipment.

Recently, the company has expanded its production scope to include eco-friendly and direct current transmission sectors. In 2022, Hyosung Heavy Industries developed a 400kV eco-friendly insulating oil transformer. Leveraging its proprietary voltage-source high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, the company is also developing a 500kV HVDC converter transformer to supply for the government's "Energy Highway" project.

Hyosung Heavy Industries currently supplies ultra-high voltage power equipment to over 70 countries worldwide. Since the early 2010s, it has maintained the top market share for 765kV transformers in the United States, and also holds the leading market share for 400kV transformers in major European transmission markets such as the United Kingdom and Norway. In addition, since 2023, the Changwon Plant has recorded annual orders exceeding 1 trillion won for ultra-high voltage transformers as a single product category for three consecutive years.

Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyunjoon stated, "Achieving 10 trillion won in ultra-high voltage transformer production is the result of building on customer trust and quality," and added, "We will continue to strengthen our capabilities across transformers, circuit breakers, and HVDC to respond to the global market."
