President Lee Shares Message on Social Media on January 8
Visits Hongkou Park During China Trip
"The Wounds of History Have Not Healed"
President Lee Jae-myung visited Lu Xun Park in Shanghai, China, on the 7th (local time) with First Lady Kim Hye-kyung to view exhibits related to independence activist Yun Bong-gil.
After returning from his state visit to China, President Lee Jae-myung stated on January 8, "I will fulfill the responsibilities and roles entrusted to me for peace and shared prosperity."
On this day, President Lee shared via his social media that he had visited Lu Xun Park in Shanghai. Lu Xun Park, formerly known as Hongkou Park, is the site where independence activist Yun Bong-gil threw a bomb during Emperor Hirohito's birthday celebration. It is known that President Lee visited Lu Xun Park after visiting the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea building in Shanghai on the 7th during his trip to China.
President Lee remarked, "The canteen and detonator thrown by a young man from a small nation were a direct challenge to the imperialist order characterized by aggression and plunder, and a powerful expression of the belief that solidarity for peace is possible." He added, "His (Yun Bong-gil's) heroic act completely changed the course of modern and contemporary East Asian history."
He further analyzed, "The Chinese government officially recognized the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, and the scattered independence movement forces were able to regroup. Shanghai became a central hub for solidarity to protect freedom and dignity beyond national borders."
However, President Lee pointed out the limitations, saying, "The wounds of history have not fully healed, and the sparks of conflict still exist everywhere in the face of dramatic changes in the international order."
He emphasized, "Now more than ever, we need politics based on respect rather than the logic of power, and diplomacy focused on cooperation rather than confrontation." He reaffirmed his determination to remember the solidarity of the past and to build a future of peace and prosperity together, stating, "I believe this is the way to honor the precious sacrifices and dedication of our forebears."
