Paju City in Gyeonggi Province held the "Peace Economy Special Zone Vision Proclamation Ceremony" on January 7 to announce its aspiration and determination to attract the Peace Economy Special Zone both domestically and internationally.

The event, held at the Grand Performance Hall of the Paju Citizens' Center, was attended by more than 200 people, including Mayor Kim Kyeongil of Paju, key dignitaries, members of the Citizens' Promotion Committee for Attracting the Peace Economy Special Zone, and local residents.

The ceremony began with a pre-event performance by the Paju City Arts Troupe, followed by the opening ceremony, the announcement of the Peace Economy Special Zone vision, and the appointment ceremony for the second term of the Citizens' Promotion Committee. In his vision statement, Mayor Kim Kyeongil presented the direction for the Paju Peace Economy Special Zone, aiming for economic growth and the establishment of a new industrial ecosystem based on peace.

Notably, the appointment ceremony for the second term of the Citizens' Promotion Committee for Attracting the Peace Economy Special Zone, which was formed in December 2023, was also held during the event, signaling the official launch of a public-private partnership system to promote the designation of Paju as a Peace Economy Special Zone.

As the finale of the event, calligrapher Lee Hwasun gave a brush calligraphy demonstration, and Mayor Kim Kyeongil, along with dignitaries and representatives of the Citizens' Promotion Committee, participated in a large brush demonstration. This symbolically expressed their strong determination to attract the Peace Economy Special Zone to Paju, further energizing the atmosphere at the venue.

Mayor Kim Kyeongil stated, "The Peace Economy Special Zone is the key to inter-Korean economic cooperation and will become a strong wing for Paju, a city of one million self-sufficient residents. We will do our utmost until the day the Peace Economy Special Zone is designated in Paju."

The Peace Economy Special Zone was legally established in 2023 with the enactment and implementation of the "Act on the Designation and Operation of the Peace Economy Special Zone." It is a special district that can actively promote corporate investment through various incentives, such as tax benefits and infrastructure support.

Meanwhile, following the Ministry of Unification's announcement in the electronic official gazette on December 26, 2025, of the "First Basic Plan for the Peace Economy Special Zone," which includes the designation of around four Peace Economy Special Zones from 2026 to 2027, Paju City is currently proceeding with the contract process for the "Paju Peace Economy Special Zone Designation Response Service" to promptly respond to the Ministry of Unification's designation plan and Gyeonggi Province's development plan for the Peace Economy Special Zone. The city announced that it plans to select a service provider within January this year and commence the project.
