Gyeonggi Province, Five Years After Groundbreaking...
Full-Scale Progress on Structural and System Works
Province: "Safety and Quality Are Top Priorities...
Remaining Processes Will Be Completed Without Delay"
The entire section of the Dobongsan-Okjeong Metropolitan Railroad, which is under construction with the goal of opening in 2027, has now been fully penetrated, leaving only the subsequent processes to be completed.
Gyeonggi Province announced on January 8 that, nearly five years after construction began in December 2020, all tunnels along the Dobongsan-Okjeong Metropolitan Railroad construction section have been connected, successfully penetrating the entire 15.11 kilometers.
Penetration is one of the major processes in the Dobongsan-Okjeong Metropolitan Railroad project. Once the remaining system work, such as electrical and signaling systems, and the interior and exterior finishing of the stations are completed, the line will open to the public.
The province completed the penetration of Section 1 in February last year and Section 3 in April. However, in the Uijeongbu segment of Section 2 (from Songsan-dong to Jagum-dong), multiple complex variables caused difficulties in construction and project management. These included additional reinforcement required due to poor rock quality, construction restrictions caused by the Korea Electric Power Corporation’s power transmission line, and excavation and drainage management issues near the Buyongcheon stream.
The Dobongsan-Okjeong Metropolitan Railroad is an extension of Subway Line 7, with a total project cost of 774.7 billion won and a target opening at the end of 2027. After the line opens, significant improvements are expected in the metropolitan transportation environment in northern Gyeonggi Province, including reduced travel times and enhanced access to public transportation.
Choo Dae-woon, Director of the Rail, Port and Logistics Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will continue to prioritize safety and quality management in the remaining processes and ensure the project is completed without delay through step-by-step on-site inspections."
