To Be Held on January 31 at the Grand Hall of Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center...
Showcasing the Essence of Calligraphy Performance
A Comprehensive Art Stage Blending Traditional Drums, Martial Arts, and Classical Music Across Genres
A special stage will be held to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the debut of Lee Hwasun, a pioneer and first-generation artist in Korean calligraphy performance.
The Korea Calligraphy Art Mentoring Association (President: Lee Hwasun) will host a calligraphy concert titled "Opening the Line" on January 31 at 5 p.m. at the Grand Hall of the Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center, celebrating the 17th anniversary of Lee Hwasun's calligraphy career.
This performance will go beyond a simple brush calligraphy demonstration, aiming to showcase the pinnacle of integrated art that combines tradition and modernity, as well as visual and auditory elements. Artist Lee Hwasun has been leading the popularization of calligraphy and the cultural heritage of Korean calligraphy art.
Lee has broken the mold of traditional courtyard-style calligraphy performances, presenting grand visual narratives by placing large-scale canvases at the forefront of the stage.
The highlight of Lee's performances is the "participatory performance," which breaks down the boundaries between the stage and the audience. The process, where the audience directly holds the large brush and completes the work together with the artist, has provided a profound catharsis of "communication" and "unity" that goes beyond mere viewing.
This performance, in particular, is expected to deliver even greater emotional impact and artistic excellence.
The lineup of performers who will enrich the depth of the concert is also impressive. Participants include pianist Kim Yunhee, master of traditional Korean drum Kim Kyungsoo, the Korea Martial Arts Preservation Association, hyangpiri player Kim Woncheol, ocarina player Ko Minjeong, baritone Park Jumin, and cellist Choi Yaein, who will add melodies and dynamic movements that span East and West.
Additionally, the second part of the concert will be hosted by announcer Lee Chaeyu, who will guide the flow of the performance with moving poetry recitations.
For the past 17 years, Lee Hwasun has traveled throughout Korea and the world, spreading the art of Hangul, and has been dedicated to popularizing calligraphy performances and enhancing their artistic value.
An official from the organizing committee stated, "This concert will serve as a culmination of Lee Hwasun's 17-year journey as a calligraphy artist, and will be a stage to declare a new artistic leap, using the weight of time that blossomed at the tip of the brush as a stepping stone."
Preparing for her first concert as a calligraphy artist of 17 years, Lee Hwasun said, "Drawing strength from the journey of pioneering the line, I want to continue conveying the matured beauty of Hangul even as time passes and my hair turns gray. I hope you will join me on this stage, where I will fulfill my mission to spread living language and revitalizing script throughout the world."
This performance is organized by "Calligraphy Brush Fragrance" and sponsored by the "Champil Calligraphy Art Research Society." Tickets can be reserved through the Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center website and NO Ticket.
